AS THEY HAD PREDICTED, at first Michael and Jennifer emailed and video-conferenced regularly after their conversation. Their careers continued to go strong, they each became involved in serious relationships, and they shared the details of their lives with each other. But over time, meetings and late nights at work and out-of-town business trips interfered with their meetings. Eventually the videoconferences stopped and the emails became less and less frequent. And before Jennifer knew it, her thirty-fifth birthday was only ten days away. Which meant Michael’s birthday was only twelve days away. Which meant they would be talking. And as she looked through her emails, she was shocked to discover that it had been nearly three months since she and Michael had last communicated. She considered emailing him to confirm their inter-birthday chat, but then decided it wasn’t necessary. Not for the Michael she knew.

Jennifer’s birthday arrived and was a day filled with activities and visitors. As busy as she was, she’d been somewhat surprised to discover that she’d spent much of the day thinking about her upcoming conversation with Michael, and looking forward to catching up. She started to get anxious that Michael might have forgotten, or might be busy. Perhaps she should have emailed him after all. But then she decided that at this late date, that didn’t make sense. Still, she was concerned.

The next day, Jennifer had dinner ready and was seated in front of her computer well in advance of the scheduled time. When her videoconferencing app chimed twenty minutes before expected, she assumed it must be her mother, and Jennifer was debating whether to take the call and tell her mother she’d have to call her the following day, or just ignore the call and let it go unanswered. She had just about decided to let the call go unanswered when she glanced at the screen and realized that it was Michael. She quickly clicked on the ‘Accept Call’ button, and watched as Michael came into view.

“Happy birthday, a day late.”

“Happy birthday, a day early.”

“Sorry to hear about Harvey.”

“Yeah, well, sometimes that’s how the cookie crumbles. But hey, the wedding was fun, wasn’t it?”

Michael was quiet for a moment, and then softly said, “I’m just not sure what to say to my best friend when her marriage falls apart.”

“Especially when it starts to fall apart before the wedding reception is over,” she said with a wry smile.

“Right. Especially when,” he agreed. “So, how are you?”

“To my surprise, I think I’m actually a bit relieved. I really thought that marriage was what I wanted, and Harvey was who I wanted, and I was looking forward to a long, happy marriage. But when it became clear that it was over, my first thought was ‘well, that was a close call’.”

“So now what?”

“So now I’m a confirmed bachelorette,” she said with authority. Seeing Michael’s face her voice softened and she added “but you’ll still always be my very best friend.”

She was surprised to see that Michael still looked a bit sad, but he replied “And you will always be my very best friend.
